I was under the impression that Mahiro's first attempt at being a grown-up was a complete bust. Starting over is probably doing him some good, even if Mihari is mostly doing this for her own somewhat warped desires.

I was fully expecting the punchline of all this to be that Mihari called it a date specifically because she knew Mahiro would get suspicious and tail her, thus giving her NEET brosis an excuse to get out of the house and go on their own "date".

I'd say it's more that Mahiro no longer has to deal with the expectations of being a super-genuis capable of winning gold medals in athletic events like Mihari. As the "younger" sibling, her being less athletic and smart is socially acceptable.

True, I think that was discussed in depth in the comments of an earlier chapter come to think of it. Kind of a silly cultural expectation that the first kid should be the best at everything, but there you go. I would argue that fits right into the "making her new life as comfortable as possible" box, though. If only by default rather than intentionally.

I was actually thinking the same thing, since there has been more than a handful of posts with long discussions in this pool we could either be remembering wrong or it was on another post.

Well her plan is to make her a stand up member of society so she'll still grow up into a beautiful woman (I wonder if that makes it permanent) but always be the younger sister.

I like how the pattern on the scarf perfectly lines up with itself. What are the odds that something like that would happen?
