Battleships of Colorado's time back to the central casemate battery ships of the 1860s were typically short and wide to have hydrodynamic qualities matching their low speeds and high heavy loading (the guns and armour around them). Battlecruisers were often longer than battleships outright, but not as wide. Even the scout cruiser Omaha was almost as long as New York and with its high freeboard could appear larger from the side.
