You are parenting incorrectly.

When uploading images that are different versions of the same images, you parent the most recent revision or highest quality version over a child.

When you want to have a large series of different images that are made as part of a theme or chronologically ordered story, you use a pool. (Or in this case, just use the pool I'd already created for the people uploading these images because apparently people are too allergic to the goddamn things!)

You should have parented to the images you replaced, not made a giant set of child posts. (Also, you can just go to the image replacement forum thread instead of creating all this work sorting everything in the first place, especially if you're just going to throw tagme on the one non-duplicate image, anyway.)
