I'm one of those that really learned of it from SRW T. My only prior exposure was pretty much only an image of Lat cosplaying Hikaru.

As someone who doesn't play Super Robot Wars, it takes me a while to try to figure out what SRW even means...
... And as someone who watched the original show, I can tell you I immediately recognize her, but certainly didn't have help from SRW.
Magic Knight Rayearth isn't as popular as Neon Genesis Evangelion, and even Evangelion has kind of faded from the forefront of people's minds in spite of almost constantly being featured in remakes for a quarter century now. Hell, people don't even actively talk about Haruhi anymore.
That said, I can remember the character well, and I can see why they might include the character. It's just for an older audience, but crossovers can work even with niche appeal, as that VA-11 HALL-A / Girls Frontline shows.
