Really, a smartphone is a terrible choice of weapon. It requires one hand to hold, the other to swipe, has no haptic feedback so it requires constant visual attention, and the screen doesn't work if you're wearing gloves of any kind. Its hard to imagine a device less suited for a battlefield. Magic Granny's not at fault here.

I'd guess the new costumes come with the conductive gloves to make the touchscreen work. Still, in my experience, those are still clumsier than a bare fingertip, and everything else checks out.
On the other hand, the phone resembles the makeup-compact-style transformation trinket. So a smartphone would make a perfectly respectable one of those - but for actually casting spells in combat, it's not the best choice.
I am now imagining a magic wand covered in buttons, wheels, and thumbpads like a Wiimote crossed with a gaming mouse.

Tactical magic wand with pistol grip, red dot sight, and underslung fireball launcher wand.

I played an Artificer once in DnD who was kinda like that.
(The tacticool stuff were throw-ins after my DM and fellow party members pointed out how the wand gizmos and Metamagic spell trigger stuffs feel like in-game.)
(Edit: There was an item called the Rod of Many Wands which does allow a player to 'attach' an underslung Fireball wand [or 'duct-tape' up to three Fireball wands together, counting the 'base' wand]. Too expensive to run for normal use, but absolutely useful for making a Doomsday™ stick for when you must absolutely kill or disable the target before it eats the Cleric.
Edit2: There's another item called the Metamagic Wand Grip [nothing say you can't make it pistol grip-shaped], which adds metamagic [spell enhancements, basically] to any wand slotted inside at the cost of additional charges. While normally a bit redundant for the Artificer, since the class already gets the ability to do it innately in two different ways as part of its class features, the effects stack.)
I really like this. When is the rest of it gonna be TL'd?
