The smug levels are off the charts.

A look into wikipedia allowed me to understand why he has such a bug up his butt about Sun Wukong. His family has a long tradition of portraying Journey to the West in opera so Sun Wukong will always be tied to his identity. It would be like someone from a dynasty of Shakespeare actors (don't know any, tbh) getting butthurt over loose Shakespeare retellings or parodies.

It's more like someone who comes from a family that is full of Shakespearian actors saying that anyone else who puts on Shakespeare performances are wrong and ruining THEIR character.

(Or, perhaps more to the point, it's like Disney trying to remake existing fairy tales in their own image, and then trying to copyright the original public domain material they used, because obviously, they own the concept of Alice in Wonderland or Beauty and the Beast, and any other telling of THEIR story or any other design of THEIR characters is just doing it wrong. ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL!)

Does he disapprove of other Journey to the West productions regardless of how faithful they are to the source? I assume he went after Chinese Oddyssey and Dragon Ball because of their use of artistic license.

He does, despite the fact that he himself promotes products that are equally unfaithful to the source.
He denounces businesses profiting from their forced association with JttW characters, but happily promotes the Golden Monkey shoe brand, which is initially a reference to Sun Wukong.
He attacks MMORPG Fantasy Westward Journey for being an unfaithful use of the lisence, but happily sold out and promotes Monkey King Reincarnation, which is, ironically, a mobile rip-off of FWJ.

Basically, no one is allowed to use the JttW lisence but him.
