I do like the take on the author on the main difference in history focus between the two franchises. Although KC is often accused of nationalism and revisionism, a core feature from the enemies is that they aren't as much the "other nations" as they are the battles/events/ships themselves. In a sort of way, they aren't fighting to defeat an enemy, but to free themselves or their enemies from their demise.

KC is guilty of all those things and is pretty much the BF5 of ship girl games. Try and talk around it all you want but that's what is. It's better to just accept what you like, than pretend it's something else.

I would rather say it is similar to Gate with its emphasis of "outsiders" being the enemy and Japan being the superior, logical force in question. The devs of Kancolle are well known to not like outside fans (at least they did, no idea if they are anymore)
At least that was how it was early on in its lifetime. I have no idea if it has changed (haven't followed the development of the game for at least 2 years now)

Tanaka and Kadokawa were always perfectly fine with outside fans, the issue lies with DMM and their region block, which is partially due the r-18 they have floating around.
Hell, Tanaka even went, "USN ships? Fuck yeah, would love those in the fleet." all the way back in 2013.
