I imagine that time passes, and yet for each birthday they celebrate turning the age listed on their profiles. Again and again and again...

It's your standard manga/anime/cartoon comedy continuity loop. You look back at your junior year in high school, and realize you celebrated annual events a dozen times each. How many flower viewings was it? How many Christmases? It's all a haze. Things keep happening, and you can reliably call back to prior events, but each milestone is as the first. Again, and again, and again.

Outside your tight bubble of curved space-time, seasons and years and decades pass. Civilizations rise, grow old, and die. Continents shift on their plates and sink below the waves. You still can't work up the nerve to confess to that girl you like.
