Depends.
But most the time, it's not.

In the military though, a private's opinion is often just shit, because he doesn't have the information to conclude a thing. He has only his eyes and ears to rely on.
That's why privates are made to comply to commands from their officers, even if it means he has to die, so that important intel/person can live or the mission can be completed, or just so that the most can live when he alone dies.
It's a very complicated problem, but most the time, a private completely complying to orders is enough for any situation in the military (not just during combat).

My captain once told me that yelling at us was to make us forget that we were human and were just robots following orders. When charging into battle, there must be a vanguard; when retreating, troops must be left behind to delay the enemy. On the battlefield, we are just pawns on the chessboard. Chess pieces cannot be moved at will.
