I mean, what would they be made out of before plastic? I would imagine polished wood to be the go-to material of choice.
There were texts talking about leather dildos, as well as even some stone ones (smoother stones like the aforementioned jade, for obvious reasons). They tended to use oils like olive oil for lube, especially with the stone ones because obviously, you'd be like going at your most delicate parts with fine sandpaper otherwise.
(Wood would be a bad choice because just imagine how hard it is to get a splinter out...)

Wood can be sanded and treated. While hands are obviously less sensitive it was not fun for fishermen and travelers by sea if their wooden oars would splinter and damage their hands.
