    What was I...

    Original commentary is slightly ambiguous. My interpretation is that feeling when you find yourself staring at something — or nothing at all — and have no idea what you had been doing or thinking about.

    The original commentary is the beginning of a sentence, where the subject is "I", the object is "what", and there's no verb. (In Japanese, the verb is usually at the end of the sentence.) English sentence structure doesn't really let you do that.
