In my region, if one says "I'm vegetarian. I don't eat meat.", you can actually expect other people to ask "but you do eat fish right?".

Heck, I know people that doesn't consider poultry as meat, and only thinks that the definition only includes beef and pork.

I am not even a religious person but I just have a habit of referring to fish as fish, in their own category. As Pronak also mentioned I consider most farm animals as meat but chicken is kinda in a special little subcategory of their own, to me.

This. This argument was the one that fuels the birth of fish burger-to be precise, Filet-o-Fish from McDonalds.

This argument was also the reason why vegetarians...no, pescatarians argue that fish are not meat, but a different kind of 'meat'.

Plastic is a different kind of meat. We should eat the oceans dry of it!

During the Holy Week, especially in Easter, catholics are forbidden to eat meat except fish. If I recall, there was a "reform (?)" about that law that allowed them to eat chicken because it was considered a "white meat".

I think the origin of fish being not considered "meat" is because of this.

Raised and practiced Catholicism most of my life. I've never heard of any reform that considers poultry an acceptable meat. Fish is the only one that's allowable.

Traditionally, Catholics abstained from meat on Fridays in general, in penance and sacrifice. Nowadays, it's only considered a rule to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent, Good Friday in particular. You can eat as meat on Easter and any day after that.

Not every Catholic observes all of that, of course...

Ehhhh~ Fish again? You said we'd be having meat though.
    What're you saying?
If you don't want any, I'll eat your portions too.
If you eat like that, you're going to get fat again, Reisen. So, I'll eat some...
Did you come here to get blown away?
    Again??
