It's kind of sad that that's how most Touhou fans start out that way, especially me... And to think, it all started from a cool & create remix of U.N.Owen was her. Thought she was a genderswapped personification of Marx.
But personally, I prefer to know the canon part by strive in agony, and beating all of the games, that to accept the fanon.

I got into Touhou from, of all things, a SPORE youtube video playing a remix of Sakuya's stage theme from EoSD. I spent hours searching online for that one remix, and my life as a Touhou fan kicked off.
I've played the games, of course. My reaction time just isn't good enough to go past Easy Modo~ (which makes me suffer in other games, too)

Not too dissimilar to how I got into Touhou. Many years ago I saw little animation of the SA cast playing instruments to Rin's stage theme "lullaby of deserted hell". Fell in love with that song and searched hours for it. I enjoyed the different song, however even then I didn't even knew what Touhou was, until I met a friend about a year later, whom I helped to install one of the pc-98 games. There I caught my interest.
And yes, I've played the games and still do and I'm going to read the canon comics/books soon, too. But I do enjoy the fanon, especially good fanfics, however sometimes it can be too much either^^

I got into Touhou in a very similar way too, I was looking for piano songs to learn, and I found a Touhou song in piano version, Necrofantasia, if I'm not mistaken. It was insanely (Actually impossible lol) hard to play, so I searched for more and more piano arrangements, thinking Touhou was some kind of mad musician or something. I started to get more and more into touhou, and before I realized it,I was getting my arse kicked by Meiling in EoSD. I absolutely love the music and of course, the games too. I have mixed feelings about the fanon through, and especially about the doujins, because I'm not very fond of yuri.
EDIT: I guess I could've phrased that better, but what I mean is that some of the fanon material, like art, 4koma, doujins, feel like they have more effort put into them than the actual games themselves. The characters talk a lot, but it feels as if they never actually say anything, and they come off as completely one-dimensional and unlikable. To me, the story doesn't feel as it really unfolds over the course of the game, because it's not really explained what's going on. From my perspective, ZUN has a great imagination, but not much talent.
Well, whatever... Never mind me, I'm just a moron.
I actually ignored all of the fan works until someone showed the games to me. While I'm not very good at them, the games are really what grabbed by interest.

I'm the same. Unfortunately I can't obtain the full versions of the games (at least at a manageable price), but the music is great.
But I don't care for all the yuri associated with the fandom. It doesn't help that some of my favorite characters are just jokes in yuri Touhou works.
