Note that Etorofu and Kunashiri are somewhat in the shape of the islands they're the namesakes of.

A lot of these places don't have English Wikipedia articles - and even if they do, they're pretty perfunctory. Not a lot of people really have an interest in the northernest north of Hokkaido, I guess.

Kunashiri (Kunashir) is the southern-most of the Kuril Islands, which are currently controlled by Russsia, via the Soviets, through occupation one day before Japan's surrender came into effect at the end of World War II. (Etorofu is the next one up the chain).

Japan claims the lower islands weren't included, only the upper ones - Russia does not accept this claim, stating that all the islands belong to them as recompense for entering the war against Japan.

It's because the number '10' can be read as /tou/, which is also a reading for 島, 'island' - and I guess because they're rather young?
