I think it is the best in terms of scope, voice, story and depth. The graphics are also pretty impressive, seeing as how the majority of other "best" psone games relied heavily on pre-rendered backgrounds(Resident Evil), full-motion video sequences(Final Fantasy), or just were able to make very impressive 2.5D games/linear 3D games(Crash Bandicoot, Wild 9 etc.) despite being able to make fully 3D games, or were limited greatly by the shallow draw-distance capabilities of the PlayStation(too many to list)...
I'm still highly impressed at how they were able to pull off some of what they did, namely how they made Liquid's Hind or Rex look so much better at a distance or how they made the sparks from bullet impacts fade away so smoothly.
Not really. It's all very fresh in my mind actually. Of all the Metal Gear games, the only two in the main franchise I haven't played until recently were MGS1 and Metal Gear 2, and of those, I just finally finished MGS1 which I recently bought on Amazon.
Now, I realize that her original voice actress clearly had a Chinese accent, but I can hardly see that undermining the overall quality of that voice artists contribution. It was hardly noticeable for most of her dialogue. Nobody complained about Liquid's British Accent, nor Sniper Wolf's Kurdish accent, nor Mantis' Russian accent... hell, nobody seemed to miss Otacon's ridiculous dweeb voice from the first game, since he noticeably turns it down for the following games.
What I'm saying is, I haven't the need to erase my exposure to Mei Ling's voice, and as a self-aware ridiculous franchise that Metal Gear is, I think even you could look past this hang-up.
I dunno if there are different versions or something, but in the two copies I've played she sounds specifically like someone who doesn't have a Chinese accent that's put a clothespin on their nose and is trying to sound as racist as possible.
Aha, that may explain it. I keep forgetting Twin Snakes is the first game remake. I've only ever played the original. And she's...well, special...it's kinda funny how she loses her accent when the game cuts back to 3D to demonstrate the soliton radar and you can hear the cut where she suddenly gets it back. Though it's really her speeches upon saving the game that sound weirdest. EDIT: Yup, watching a Twin Snakes walkthrough and she has the same actress as in MGS4. She's silly and much more fitting, though she doesn't really have any accent.
