It's pretty similar, alright. The original flower was colored either purplish or orange-ish, so it already got red color genes inside. They boosted the red color gene into dominant, thus resulting in this new variety.

What's funnier is that the Chinese researchers who bred the Reimu flower did intentionally name it after the Touhou character.
Talk about the most expensive fanwork ever...

Also, the flower has already been around for about a year, according to some sources from China and Taiwan. It only garnered attention recently because someone has finally confirmed that the researchers naming it "Reimu" isn't a mere coincidence.

Some actually name their daughters Reimu as well. With a right last name, this can actually work.

Some Chinese last names resemble actual colors, and like all East Asian, Chinese put their last name before their first name. You see where I'm going, eh?
