Seems like all the new girls are besotted with Setogawa, while the veterans he inherited from his wife are more standoffish and reserved. Their Admiral, but not their Admiral.

I sincerely hope, someday, they'll get along with each other and will be more like a family.

I actually prefer this dynamic. Artists keep falling into relationship cliches instead of accepting that these kind of things take time. The man just lost his wife. He doesn't look at any of the girls in the way those white-clad Admirals do. This guy is actually pro-active, but unlike all those other Admirals, he keeps missing the mark. If anything, he's the perfect self-insert because he's lived a life of regrets and successes; the others Admirals are just so bland that I can't relate to them. Setogawa cares for his girls and they for him, but at the same time, it's a camaraderie that is born instead of a romance. There was another doujin where Kongou hit 99 and the both of them were hesitant at the thought of the ring ... and decided to just throw a party and have a friendly dance.

Slow burns work well here.
Rather than a self insert... he feels like an actual person instead of just a character. This artist (and this Admiral) has become an instant favorite of mine since I read "Going Beyond Your Sea". Works like yua's, kouji's, and pekopeko's are great... but none of their admirals really felt like actual people. They're fun characters and I enjoy reading about them... but it feels like they're missing something that this Admiral does have.

I like how he is a character that you buy to it. You invested in it. Some TTK characters like kouji's felt like a blank slate. You are cheering him because you are literally cheering what you wish you get. Setogawa felt like a character that is not you, but a legit three-dimensional character. Maybe not something you'd like as a character, but if you legit have opinions of his actions and character instead of the lack of, shows how legit the character is.

So, in that way, MasoAdmiral is the admiral among admiral, like Tonda's.

IMO Going Beyond Your Sea is a flashback from the past and the current scenes with the Brits are just after the Event (real time). I'm sure he's had a closer relationship with his former wife's shipgirls now, especially with the scenes of him going around the base and all.
and yes, this is the most relatable Admiral I've ever read as well. He's an everyman as close to us as possible.
yeah. also imagine having to relate to bombergrape admiral. welp.
Bomber Grape Admiral is actually sympathetic in the same mold as Wile E. Coyote is in road-runner. In that his dogged perseverance and his actual efforts make us route for him despite the wackiness. MasoAdmiral is the same tired damn joke "look how wacky I am in my self-pain addiction" and when they tried to dramatize that with Murakumo, it felt so damn forced. I'd put MasoAdmiral on the same level as Sheldon from Big Bang Theory as a character.
So, in that way, MasoAdmiral is the admiral among admiral, like Tonda's.
Shiba Dog Admiral or riot, as I believe the young people say nowadays.
So why is it me today?my lady.I wanted to talk!I want to get to know you better!Oh, what an honour! Whatever should we talk about?I thank you for your invitation,
