To be fair, when they try to do it any way other than "just pick your gender, already, so the story can start!", it can be confusing when people don't immediately pick up on what are supposed to be the gender cues, especially when games (like Pokemon games in particular) can be translated into dozens of other languages and are read by kids.

For example, starting Rune Factory 4, they show you an airship flying, and then you have a dialogue option.
"Flying high, baby!"
or
"Goodness! I'm so high up!"

That's your gender select option. There's no hint that's actually your gender select option (until after you make it), but it is. (Because clearly, no man would ever be worried about heights in an open-air flying machine without seatbelts they really do fall out of to cause the prerequisite amnesia on landing.)

What would the third be? Sexual magnetism? Mutism?
