Knit fabric (most sweaters) is incredibly "honest" about the figure. Rather than hanging loose like inelastic fabrics, it hugs, making the exact shape and size of, say, breasts (aka "sweater puppies"), unmistakable while not showing off skin, making them an "acceptable" method of fan service.
