But the dolls are -disposable-. 1.00 Power = 1 Doll Life; 1 Bomb = 1 Overcharged/burnt out doll. (There are other more terrifying things I'm thinking of when I was writing this... More specifically: How much [P] Alice had to obtain to make and maintain a doll army...) Alice sacrifices hundreds, if not thousands of dolls on a regular basis. So I wouldn't put it past her to make a disposable doll plan for Marisa.
theres also the theory that Shanghai and Hourai are just a class of Alice's dolls as well. Considering she has such a thing as freaking grenade dolls its the equivalent of sending your army out on constant suicide missions.

Actually, considering in their original appearance that they were always "Shanghai Dolls" and "Hourai Dolls", note the plural, that's basically canon. It's only when other people are brought in that Shanghai and Hourai become singular, such as when it first started in the fighting games (which means it was most likely a Tasofro decision instead of a ZUN one, and in I think one of the mangas, which ZUN doesn't have too much of a hand in, and due to all the fan-importance of shanghai and hourai probably let it go with a "well sure why not" - that is, if I'm even correct about the manga specifying otherwise.
The very existence of Shanghai and Hourai are dubious. Even if they do exist, they may not be what fandom usually draws them as. Technically speaking, they're just personifi... dollifications of her spellcards.
A. The dolls aren't alive to begin with, they're just animated by magic. B. They don't have sentience, they're puppets controlled by Alice. C. You don't throw dolls away when you bomb with them - you start out with 0 active dolls, and have to activate them by getting P charges.
It's like using up your phone's battery and having to plug it into a power socket, there's nothing tragic about needing to recharge them.
