What's with the hyper expensive opening graphics? Granted that level of talent frame for frame is awesome.. but didn't it hurt them?

An opening animation only has to be drawn once. I think the director and the head artists wanted something that the audience would see as whimsical and happy. If the costs had been too high, they would have backed off and done a standard type opening.
