So I just discovered the existence of Fate series. I'm interested in playing Fate (Grand order) since I also discovered it through riyo's Learn with manga. Is Fate series and it's game any good? I'm a bit skeptical since I saw a guy who spent 1000$ for the gatcha thing and almost made himself broke.

Prepare yourself and your willpower: the salt is real.
Then again, I don't play it. My friends do, and it's quite fun if a bit like a typical side-battle rpg. The fun (or so they say) is on how good you can roll that character gacha for the characters that you want.
Fate series itself (or the Nasuverse to some extend) has an interesting setting, that while mostly consistant throughout the series, be prepared for them to add new rules to justify the new story.
FGO isn't the best game to judge the series overall, since it is essentially a harem game with gacha. Totally F2P (I never paid) if you want to, but having some of the higher rarity servants certainly give an advantage. Gameplay isn't something to write home for, as I mostly play the game for the story, and the events.
Would recommend checking out the other works in the series.
If you are going to check the Fate series in its entirety, be warned that in the scale of optimism to pessimism, it more often than not leans towards the latter.
Though if you only want to play FGO, prior knowledge of the series isn't exactly a requirement.
