Everything more than the nod and a grunt to aknowledge the other is considered unnecessary chit-chat, which is not efficient and thus not german.

It's funny because where I am in the UK, a greeting typically goes by shouting across a terraced street going "NOW THEN KIDDO HOW YOU DOOD"
