Well, you're not *exactly* wrong there...

    But, definitely not right.

You know, now that I think about it, it's rather surprising that communism didn't take off in Japan of all countries, given their perceived "others before myself" mentality.

The Japanese Communist Party is actually rather strong, and holds a non-insignificant amount of seats in the diet even today!

They've been active since 1922, but were deemed illegal by the Meiji government (particularly in regards to their anti-war stance). Interestingly, the American occupation government legalised them, though SCAP neutered them in the 50s.

Overall, it's always been popular - Japan just never went in for 'strong' communism in the Soviet/Maoist vein.

It wasn't just "others before myself", though. It was, "you're in the same boat as these others, so if you help them, it'll come back around to you," which ultimately tries to play to selfishness, as well.

It was also, specifically, that the old social order was evil and favored those damn bourgeoisie and the people at the top of the social order (at least, in the revolution phase). It's that pitch that has trouble selling in Japan, since Japan is, culturally, much more inclined towards supporting the ruling order/maintaining the status quo over violent revolt against even the more flagrantly corrupt of their overlords. (Russian serfs, by contrast, had suffered centuries of brutal rulership and was always much less socially cohesive, while China's national unity was repeatedly fractured by conquering overlords.)

Also, there was a lot of suppression behind the scenes from the ultra right wing political groups in Japan and American interference. Even assassinations of prominent labor activists and politicians.

Thing is... there is no other form of communism.

Because for it to work even in theory the state needs to control everything to dole it out 'fairly', but you are NEVER going to find a nation where everyone agrees to just give up all control of their assets for 'the greater good'. So as can be seen in every single instance of communism ever the state has to forcibly seize assets, punishing those that resist, and generally oppressing the population via dictating how they live in all aspects in order to make sure things are disturbed 'fairly'.

The actual various communist parties in non-failed states where jokes, they were allowed to exist because it was obvious they would never gain the support needed to constitute a threat. (no Communist party has ever gained control of a state by a method outside of violent insurgency that I can recall) The witch hunts and such by some stupid conservatives where pointless stupidity that only gave them a martyr narrative to try and exploit, the only defense you ever actually needed against communism was the unbroken record of failure and oppression of every communism state in history.

We have a pre-made Communist counter. Nationalist Chinese destroyer Tan Yang (ex-Yukikaze): the lucky one.

If you're talking assignment, then I'm a Japanese ship.
That's not what I meant, I'm talking about what's in your heart!
    Two lands to call home.
    It's so plain to see!
    Hey, Hibiki.
Both of them are my precious homeland, yes.
Are you a Japanese ship right now? Or are you a Soviet one?
Akatsuki, you're asking something pretty difficult there.
But the USSR also took good care of me, see?
    I know!
If Japan was to become Soviet also, then I would have only the one home, wouldn't I!
    Heheh, I sure am! Because I'm a First-Class lady, that's why!
Let's see... Of course, Japan, the land where I was born and raised is dear to me...
    Wha?
I see! You have two homes, then!
    She's not getting the hint...
