I'm guessing it's jumping up, because the idea that it would have run for the edge, then spun around and tried to catch itself with its front paws is too strange to really visualize. Meanwhile, I've seen my own cat do a four-foot vertical jump before...

Annoyingly well. Even when I put heavy and irregularly-shaped things like statuettes on top of my bookshelves to block a clean jump, he still jumps up there (bowling everything in his way over), then tries to get up to the rafters...
