It seems unlikely the early war Zeroes that Ryuujou would have carried were ever truly painted white, but rather some shade of gray (loosely called 飴色 ameiro, or "candy-color") that blanched badly in sunlight.

Note that the Akutan Zero was one of Ryuujou's planes.
