The landing gear fell off because they weren't retracted and the plane was going too fast. Retractable landing gear can't hold up to high-speeds

Incidentally, yes, the Yakov Shmirnov reference is exactly what was in the original commentary. (Part of why I wish more translators would translate the commentary...)
