As a side note, it's called "Aqua Regia" because it was critical to medieval methods of extracting trace gold from ore materials.

"Aqua Fortis" (Nitric acid - primarily used as fertilizer or explosives) was capable of dissolving most metals except gold, and was used first to dissolve all the other metals in an ore. "Aqua Regia" (a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid) was capable of dissolving gold, and would be used after that to dissolve all the gold (and only the gold), so that when the acid was evaporated, it would leave relatively pure gold behind.
