Automata
I was reluctant to try another Square published title so soon after being disappointed by FF15, so I was already on the fence about playing Nier: Automata. Ironically what drove me even further away were the gratuitous character designs, so I figured the game just wasn't going to be for me.
However after thoroughly playing it, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The way it utilizes multi-point-of-view storytelling is relatively fresh, every nuanced reveal or sidestory resonates and is handled with care. The overall narrative doesn't suffer too much either and constantly tackles staple Sci Fi themes without feeling very recycled, more than often I was reminded of genre classics like Ghost in the Shell or Akira especially with the game's noteworthy soundtrack.
The gameplay mechanics themselves are rewarding (especially on Hard), it also manages to seamlessly mix between hack n' slash, platformer and shoot-ehm-up elements without sacrificing one for the other, keeping the same "Plug Chip" system to customize your build throughout!
Nier: Automata is much more than it appears 2B (don't hurt me) and it's difficult to appreciate without playing firsthand!
