The fires would force all the crickets and other insects to suddenly burst into flight to try to save themselves, which was an opportunity for all the insectivorous birds, which hung around the edges of the fire waiting for lightly toasted grasshoppers to leap up into their waiting mouths, even if it meant getting some singed feathers doing it.
