Surprisingly, there aren't a lot of classic harem examples in Kancolle fan works, despite the source material basically being "meet up with a bunch of affectionate girls". It's mostly girl's love and romantic humor short stories.

Not that I would say that is good or bad. Writing a harem story where the protagonist isn't an idiot or an asshole is really hard, in my opinion at least. It's just unusual that, even when all the pieces are in the source material, the harem blueprint doesn't get played straight more often.

Either that says something about harem stories being a tried genre, or about people's attachment to Kancolle's characters beyond the depth of their facets. Or maybe I'm just out of touch.

We do have the concept of secretary ships, which does tend to steer things away from the harem genre.

Not only that, but you also only get 1 wedding ring for free in the game and despite what bragging rights you may see in forums, only a small subset of players actually pay for more wedding rings or even ship slots. So most fan artists will give their 1 freebie ring to their favorite ship girl and that's it.

It does exist, just overwhelmingly in the h-doujins. It's not hard to find things like Kongou-class harem doujins or R-18 artwork series.

I think it's more that people don't have a good concept of how the interpersonal dynamics of a bigamous relationship actually even work, so they just make the girls have a one-track mind that only thinks about getting attention from one single asshole to the exclusion of all else. To be fair, it's not like there are that many examples of actual bigamy in the modern world outside of some Sheiks and compounds with religious zealots living in Texas or Arizona. Japan has a pretty strong practice of keeping lots of mistresses that form functional secondary or tertiary families, but not where the wife and mistress actually have to live together and deal with one another. Hence, it always seems to be a state of perpetual jealousy and catfighting.

To be fair, Ooi is his first shipgirl.
