Wow, from "somewhat amusing joke about her spending habits" to "depressing guilt-trip for failing her dad on his big day" in the span of one page. This series really doesn't let you stay comfortable in one mood or another for long does it?

Well, the "amusing joke about her spending habits" was also a "depressing guilt-trip" if you consider that she's both that irresponsible in the first place to have near-zero money left and also that she chooses to lie her way out while being so known as a liar by her mother that it's seen through immediately. If anything, actually coming clean in this page is the more hopeful behavior on her part.

I do agree in that, though the whole breaking down into tears part is still depressing to me.
I guess in retrospect I should've elaborated how, in my experience, most authors/artists would've left page 2 as the "punchline" with the careless NEET getting caught and punished by her family (too many examples of punishments used for humor in manga to count). This author though adds a third page to these little story snippets that end up subverting the suggested tone of the previous two; they did this last time too by insinuating that NEET-chan threw away the job-seeking book, only for it to actually be on the shelf. By now I really should see it coming.
For a 24 year old to be acting in such a way, where did her parents go wrong? Neeko really is a messed up person in multiple ways, she feels guilty, but then goes back to her normals ways. Sympathizing with her is pretty much impossible and undeserved at this point.
You know, I would probably watch an anime based on these.
