my guess is because she can never have a legitimate relationship, because anyone who looks at here turns to stone, and the loneliness is probably getting to her.
This reminds me of that made for TV movie or miniseries where the main male adult character, along with his daughter, meet a medusa type woman, and they find that he has special red tinted glasses that prevent her from turning him to stone....
It's possible he put it on her (so it would save everyone, rather than just the one wearing it).

This is actually from an old story. Her lover, overcome with debt he could not pay, killed himself by her gaze. Overcome with grief, she later stared into a mirror and turned her gaze on herself.
