The funny thing... this would totally work.

Shotguns really don't care much what you jam down the barrel.

That's actually intriguing. I guess rules of ballistic energy apply even when using coated candy pieces as ammunition.

Considering all the various jokes about Nagato on Setsubun, this may just be par for the course.

I don't recall the movie name, but I remember a farm woman pointing to a trespasser while warning him about using rice loaded shells and unafraid of using a weapon that won't kill him. That was when I though the idea to be completely plausible.

Could that kill you though? Or is it like getting hit with a sandbag?

I don't think it'd be necessarily lethal, but that doesn't mean it couldn't kill you or disable you.

Rice is pretty hard. Think about how grain has to be run through heavy stones to crush it into flour. Shooting someone with that would be about as lethal as loading a shotgun shell with thick sand or crystal salt, and it could probably cause some pretty heavy lesions up close.

This one shows more of the aftermath.

Based on what it did the pumpkin it would probably draw blood at close range (and only close range the beans/candy would have low density in relation to surface area so they'd slow rapidly from drag) and if it hit your eye you might loose it, but no it doesn't have the power to kill.

They actually tired rice right after the skittles in the video above. It did absolutely nothing even from a few feet away it basically lost all velocity the instant it cleared the barrel and just kind of fluttered around.

The key with projectiles like this is mass vs surface area commonly referred to as 'sectional density' in shooting. Since the projectile has no continuing thrust once it's out of the gun the only thing pushing it forward through air drag is basically it's own momentum. Rice is awful at this needless to say: it's not made of very heavily elements to start with, they're not that densely arranged, and once dried the water content is largely replaced by air the result is it that it has basically no ablity to push through air regardless of how fast it's initially accelerated.

These features also matter in penetrating materials, the strength of the projectile and materiel comes into it as well, but such things being equal a more dense and lower area projectile penetrates much more easily(duh). Swinging this back around to something vaguely naval this is why bigger guns tend to have longer range even at the same or a somewhat lower velocity, volume (that determines mass) increases faster then surface area (which is the prime factor for drag) hence their ratio of momentum to drag (ballsitc coefficient) improves with shell size.

So what I got from that is that Skittles can do some legitimate damage.

And I thought they were just bad for your teeth.

Dry soybeans are less dense then skittles, but the beans tend to be smaller one paper I found listed about 7.7mm and another paper gave a fresh seed weight of 300-350 milligrams. Using the higher end produces a sectional density actually quite similiar to the skittle (which is about 13mm on average, but weigh nearly a gram), so I would expect about the same results. The damage produced to the pumpkin in the video is a bit more then what you see in some videos of people shooting paintball guns at them, so I'd expect a bit more injure then a paintball gun.

Namely probably broken skin, maybe the beans or skittles lodged in the wounds and it could certainly put an eye out. This assumes bare skin though, as even a T-shirt would likely defeat these projectiles and prevent actual penetration though I'd still expect welts or bruises.

This is only at very close range though, both projectiles would loose velocity very quickly.

Still, it is an interesting experiment. I guess that is why lead in particular is used for gun bullets and not steel. It's one of the heaviest metals available in production and generates the most energy per shot for a given range similar projectiles. I've never really thought of it that way before.

Although when it comes to shotguns, almost anything relatively loose and heavy could be packed into improvised slugs, and those really can inflict some terrifying damage, not just clipped skin. But that's getting all off topic.

In any case, I wouldn't want to stand in front of a shot shell spray of holiday beans. The oni better hope she brought her thick jacket today.

But man, I was expecting Sara to convert her drum magazines on her skirt's hem into cartridges that fire a sort of rat shot and grab an actual M1928A1 because lol.

Not only because of that, actually. Lead being a dense, malleable metal causes more damage because it can deform on impact, aggravating the wound cavity. With same caliber, a lead bullet can cause more damage than a full metal jacket precisely because of this.
