You often see these in images of foreign schools, don't you.

I never thought this would happen to me. :-)

Wait, they don't have this kind of chair in Japan?

Lots of schools in the US have chairs like that, but I can't recall ever seeing one where the desk flips up like that. Kogasa has the right idea about getting into the seat.

    Meanwhile, under Nina Einstein's panties....

Or at least Kogasa hasn't run into one before, unlike Nazrin.

    A surprisingly advanced chair.

Some of the commenters said they'd seen them in universities and schools, but apparently they aren't as common in Japan as they are overseas.

I get the impression that a lot of colleges over there use lecture halls with fixed tables, but that might be media misinformation at work...

Japanese Grad Student here, really big lecture halls (aka the undergrad lecture halls) have fixed tables. Smaller ones more often have these types of chairs, though still somewhat rarer, more common in small auditorium type rooms. Though I've actually seen more of these chairs in Japan than I have when back home though the places I went too were rather well funded so that's probably why.

Ironically in Japan for some reason I've seen that the more well funded the place the more likely they have these chairs..., Low Tier National University: Almost none, Top Tier National University: Some, Government Funded National Research Institute: Tons.

As someone who went to school in the US (as I happen to live in the US), I've MOSTLY had the kind like those that don't flip-up (they have ample room to get in, for the most part).

The few times I did get a flip-up one, though, I found that I greatly preferred the kind that didn't. Any kind of leaning on the thing and it felt like I was going to upend my work . . .

These are a bit tricky to sit in, though...
The table section's a tight fit...
