Probably, there was one company that fired a bunch of workers by disabling their key cards while they were out at lunch and not telling them until they came back.

Egads, over here unless you do something incredibly stupid or illegal you need at least one written warning before being fired for something you did like being off sick without a doctors note or something but if you're getting made redundant or 'downsized' they have to give you at least a weeks warning ot in both cases you can just go to an employment tribunal to either get your job back or be compensated in some other way.

Japan is scary, yay for British labour laws.

Oh, that was not a Japanese company. American one IIRC. Been almost 8 years since I read about that incident, though, so can't name it. The sheer assholery of the move stands out though.

Ah, Japan actually has very strong labour laws; they just only really apply to 'seishain', the full-time/'real' employees of a company. In recent years, it's become much harder to become a seishain - companies are increasingly using contract workers, who can be laid off much, much more easily (and also have less mandatory benefits that they're required to provide to seishain). Even if you don't terminate the contracting employee half-way through, you can just not renew (they're often 1-year perpetual cycle).

You really can't actually get fired that easily if you're there under a full-time proper contract in Japan. And if you're a public servant, you can't really get fired at all (short of committing some grave crime).

What if they never ask for me to come back... what if a different submarine gets posted and Goya isn't needed anymore, and gets the chop...?
Is having Goya take a holiday going to cause trouble for all the other girls dechi? Maybe the Admiral's gonna be mad...
Goya here dechi. Today, since I've caught the 'flu, I'm taking a holiday from the Orel Cruise dechi.
What kind of greeting should I even do first thing in the morning dechi? What if my greetings are ignored... and my time-card and locker have been taken away...?
