That's actually not nearly as bad as old-fashioned corsets were. They were reinforced with whalebone because it had to be harder than bone to stay that restricted, and they broke ribs to fit into those things.

With a corset squeezing the lower torso out of existence, there's nowhere for the diaphragm to go. Those fans dainty ladies would fan themselves with? That was to blow more oxygen into their mouths, because they would faint without doing so. They were obsessed with a "wasp-like" waist (read: doesn't look human) to the point of deforming their bodies.
