I'd answer unabashedly. Shame is one thing, but if I had to hide what I do for a living from others, and it is what I enjoyed doing, I would be casting a false sense of guilt on myself by believing it was a thing I couldn't talk about.

I mean, no need to go into the gross details. Could just say "I'm a freelance/independent/amateur anime artist" and not even mention it further than that, but I wouldn't want to invalidate myself by outright lying.
