If a shipgirl's height is based on the ship's length, Yuubari was 138.9 meters, Katori and Kashima were 129.77 m and Ooyodo was 192 m. Of course, there's not actually a consistent standard in that regard, but the official art certainly makes Ooyodo look tall. Just look at how long her legs are.

I guess in that case, it's not a problem so much of difficulty understanding the Japanese as it is difficulty writing in English. (Although not knowing English grammar certainly hasn't stopped some people...)
Most English-Japanese translators are not native English speakers, nor are they Japanese. (You have to look hard to find Asian language lessons in America, and even though every Japanese student gets English lessons, they are almost as solipsistic about their own culture as we are with ours, so there are few people with the interest and capability to translate.) In my experience working with fansubbing/scanlations, I've found they're mostly from other Asian nations, with Koreans in particular being the most frequent, and a smattering of Eastern Europeans in this mix for some odd reason.
