Even though I love Fire type Pokémon and all, my first version was Blue and and chose Squirtle as my starter because at that time (lots of persons advised me to use this one).

But for the remake, I took FireRed and Charmander as my starter.

No, no, Libe. We call them "classic" or "vintage". That way, we can charge the nostalgia-blind ten times as much! Nintendo is a master of "vintage" gaming, finding new ways to resell their 8-bit stuff over and over on media that will, itself, undergo planned obsolescence like on the Wii. These mini-NES things would be a mistake, since they don't go obsolete, but they cleverly decided to only sell like 40 of them in the whole world so that they can have ever-inflated scalper prices, as well.

You got to give Nintendo credit for being able to tap that Nostalgia vein time and time again. I don't know if its some sort of sorcery or subliminal messages in commercials but they can get people to replay games over and over again and make money off it. Then again I'm guilty of it as well so I can't denounce their strategy.

Except ... the difference between Gen I and, say, Gen III or Gen IV is ridiculous, nevermind Gen VII we're having now. This might come off as biased (full disclosure: the first Pokemon games I properly played was the Hoenn games), but imo the modern Pokemon games we know of began either in Gen III or Gen IV.
