This morning I was streaming the local news on my radio and they brought up the topic of Fate/GO success in Japan.
"Its a story where players fight alongside historical figures and legends."
"Oh, that sounds quite educational. Glad to see not all smartphone games are just time wasters."

I doubt it that it's Sakura Saber, because ordinary Japanese people hardly knows about Arthurian legend. I bet it's Demon Archer, which is a genderswapped Oda Nobunaga.

Eh, not as bad as Strike Witches.

(Wonder what Chuck would think though. People have claimed things ranging from him being okay with it to being amused and to contacting his lawyers, but I can't find any definitive proof.)

Man, I want to see that be a headline one day.

My guess is that he isn't into anime enough to know if it was a tribute to him or a slight, and decided to just not comment either way. Although I am sure he has to be aware of it. He has bigger concerns on his name though, like his just recently lost case on safes and stuff. I'm pretty sure he had another legal case but I don't remember.

May I ask what "understand" is? The appeal of having historical/legendary men turned to girls? May I ask what you find particularly attractive to the notion of "oh this girl is Stalin!"?

I understand that in the current condition of Fate, the genderswappings happened because Arturia was such a pillar of the franchise to begin with, and she was genderswapped entirely out of the neccessity of making a male-oriented eroge upon a premise Nasu already thought up, not because someone thought genderflipping male characters are hot.

Applies that to the fact that the majority of major characters in history and legends are male, and there goes the franchise's spree of genderswapping everything. I don't particularly see how the "swap" part is considered "hot". The closest thing to a fetish applied to this logic would be the trap characters, which are still technically male.

I actually had the exact same opinion you do of Fate a long time ago when I first heard of "Rawr, I'm a dragon" during the fate stay night airing. I guess for me the way I see it is that the actual person is dead and the girl is a new person just with the memories and personality of the original. Its an alternate reality kind of thing like with Kancolle and shipfuckers. Actually if you want to get down to it is more of a Touhou kind of approach. Throw away your commonsense and don't think about it too much. It's cute so it's fine.

IMO Fate franchise's genderswapping spree is nowhere as obnoxious as other media franchise tho. Yes, many of the genderswaps feel quite forced but at least the writers are also comfortable with non-genderswapped historical figures. There are worse offenders out there such as Koihime Musou and Eiyuu Senki but somehow they don't get as much as bad press compared to Fate.

I consider that to be merely because Fate is just a much bigger franchise.

It's like why Pokemon get (stupid)accusations of teaching Satanism to kids, while franchises like MegaTen can have you flat out side with Lucifer to take down the Christian God and not have a bad press.

Fate also handwaves it pretty smartly, in places. For examples...

Drakes a woman because it's actually Queen Elizabeth disguised as Drake.

Sangzang's a woman because modern media has been adapting the story with feminine pretty boys or actual woman to force romance, so suddenly he's materalized as a she because of the modern concept of him actually being a woman.

A genderswapped Arthur would have made sense if it was actually Guinevere having taken on the name arthur after his death. Like she took on the mantle of 'arthur' and pretended to be a man, similar to joan of arc.
