Well, I feel like you're right about the size part, but Acerola didn't act like Totem Mimikyu didn't exist. She knew it was there when she sent the protagonist in to take a picture of it. She will even give tips on Mimikyu's type weaknesses if you give up on her trial early, so she had to have known it was the Totem's species. It was the room at the back of the store that Acerola didn't think existed.
