Are you sure the translation is correct? Rather than "are going home", it seems to me from the panel that it should be "(already) went home".
帰ってる, not 帰った。 Plus, they are going home, in the present progressive sense, since they are in fact IN THE MIDDLE of the act of going home (the action is still in progress and not complete yet).
