Yeah! The MG42 was an ammo-eater. My father told me once, that in the last days of the war to save ammo every 6th cartridge was pulled from the belt, so you could only fire bursts. My father was drafted from the school-bench in 1944 and sent to the western front primarily to dig trenches. Most of his classmates were killed there. He was 14 then.
