It's "After meal" vs "Before cake" you know... Well... she's not wrong if the cake is dessert after the meal, though.
The translation has changed entirely since my comment - there was no pun originally - but yes, the assumption is that you eat your cake (or pie, in the early translation) after you eat dinner.
