The Royal Navy had been protecting the Isles and Commonwealth waters for a long, long time Graf. They have done it all at some point. Germany is rather young by comparison.

This was actually a serious thing during the war, fishing boats obviously helped feed the population so like any freighter full of food they were targeted as part of the Germany naval strategy, because Britain was so close to the mainland a number of ports and their approaches where fish could be offloaded were in range of Luftwaffe aircraft and also under threat by submarines and mines. Hundreds of boats were sunk and thousands of fisherman killed during the war in a largely forgotten contribution to helping keep the population fed.
