Then abruptly awoken early in the morning by cat scratches and biting.

Speaking as someone with cats... move the cat. Even trying to barely brush the blanket near them will cause the cat to instantly spring awake, but at the same time, a cat will fall back asleep in like 10 seconds. Meanwhile, it takes me like two hours to get to sleep, so I'm not feeling sympathy for waking that cat up.
