Heh, this I can relate. There was a classmate of mine back in primary school (equivalent to what you call an elementary school) who claims that he keeps cockroaches as pets, then there was one time when a cockroach was randomly crawling on the wall in class (the lesson that time was done and the teacher of the next subject hasn't come in yet), he had this smug face while he reached the roach in question holding a small container. I could never forget that moment when his face turned from smug to something like he just shat bricks. Nevertheless there was an uproar in our class, and the teacher who came in later took care of it with a swatter.
And just like international relations and domestic policy, everyone screams in terror and panics when a beetle crawls into class, but the moment you go biblical and crush the threat, suddenly you are the bad guy.
"omg, are you crazy? don't you appreciate nature?" "How could you be so cruel? Even insects have feelings."
