I've been meaning to ask: What's with the whole "black base" this and "white base" that? I keep seeing those two terms thrown around in the KanColle fandom occasionally, but I have no idea what they mean besides that "black" is somehow bad.

"Black Company(ブラック企業)" is a Japanese term for evil corporations that abuse their employees with minimal wage. Consequently, a Black Base would be one where you farm certain shipgirls for parts or send out subs and destroyers on expeditions all day every day.
At least that's where it started, and things can get much darker real fast. For example, the 'real' shitty base Shigure and Murasame ran into some while ago looks like they might be using shipgirls as comfort women. Compared to that, harsh training and hardcore combat isn't even remotely "black".

To summarize, black base is used either jokingly for bases full of petty catfights and light sexual harassments, or seriously for some concentration-camp-like hellholes.

The more I read this comic, the more I want Bismarck to request a transfer to this base.
