IJN battleships are almost cute thanks to their whimsical looking pagoda towers. Actually, battleships are cute. Let's just establish that now.
The IJN cruisers though, are not cute. They're very stern-face and serious looking ships, especially with the big flat face on Takao's superstructure here. She looks very much like she's here to just ruin your day. I get this kind of feeling even when looking at pictures of Myoukou in Singapore with the back half of the ship blown off. The Japanese heavy cruisers really have that "boss" feeling to them, like they've gotta be introduced with angry drums and big rude brass.
I like both of them.
Maybe this is why Kancolle largely has serious cruisers and baka squadron battleships.

Interesting observation. Presumably that's 'cause their Battleships were mostly WW1-era while the heavy cruisers were more modern in design. Personally, whenever I look at photos of warships from the early 1900's compared to their WW2 counterparts, the older ships give of a sort of "whimsical" feel in their design.
